Six Handed Pinochle follows the rules and scoring of a four-handed pinochle.
However, the two teams include three players instead of two. In two-handed pinochle, the dummy hand or kitty is a set of cards that the declarer can use to improve their hand. The declarer can choose to play with the kitty or without it. If the declarer chooses to play with the kitty, they must meld the cards in the kitty before playing any of their own cards.
In our example, we're going be seeing all the cards playable. Normally, the cards are held in hand and only you can see your own cards until played. My initial impression of Pinochle was heavily colored by playing a lot of Spades, a game which has only a few restrictions on what cards can be played when "following" a lead card. The game is won when either team has a total score of 1500 or greater at the end of a round.
If both teams cross the finish line in the same round then the team who currently holds the bid wins regardless of the actual point values. If a player has the 9 of trump, he/she is allowed to switch it with the flipped up card from the deck after winning a trick.
A player that switches a 9 of trump is awarded 10 points. 10 points are also awarded to a player who melds a 9 of trump or plays a 9 of trump into a trick.
The other player must then follow suit if possible by playing a card of the same suit. If they cannot follow suit, they can play any card from their hand. The highest card of the suit led wins the trick, and the winner of the trick leads the next one. Once every player has been dealt 12 cards the auction begins.
Here players bid the minimum number of points they believe their team can get during that round.
After each trick, players draw one card from the stock into their hand starting with the trick-winning player. For the last 12 tricks, melds are taken into each player's hand and are no longer announced by the player who wins the trick. The traditional trick-taking rules apply only for these last 12 tricks.
Pinochle is played with either two teams of two (Partnership Pinochle) or individually among three players (Cutthroat Pinochle). If two identical cards are played, the first one wins. A player who wins a bid of 400 or more takes the pot in addition to the money won from each other player.
Some groups simplified the card values by making Aces, Tens and Kings worth 10 and all other cards zero. There was also an intermediate version in which Kings and Queens had a value of 5 each. When four played it was often the dealer who sat out rather than the player to dealer's right.
These amounts depend only on the declarer's bid - there is no extra payment for points in excess of the number bid. Bidding well is a crucial skill in Double Deck Pinochle... It is so important that it is used to decide the winner in certain cases when the score is not sufficient to do so.
For someone used to Spades, being more restricted in your choice of cards can be frustrating. Just remember that everyone is equally affected by the rules, though. I first started playing Double Deck Pinochle when I began implementing it for World of Card Games, about 6 months ago.
Sometimes, the game also uses double pinochle decks of 64 cards that include 8s and 7s. If playing the 4-player game, the winner of the bid and their partner have the right to exchange cards. The winner’s partner selects exactly 3 cards to pass to their partner.
The declarer (winner of the bid) adds those 3 cards to hand and examines them. After, they send back 3 cards to their partner, which can include sending back some cards they just received. If both players draw cards of the same rank, they cut again. The Dealer shuffles, then the non-dealer cuts, leaving at least five cards in each portion of the pack (stock). |
